At Shelf Chemistry, we refuse to build a recommendation engine. We have will never feed a data set into a computer. Every tincture that leaves our dispensary is chosen by a human who has read it, felt it, and matched it to a mood, not a metadata tag.

This page is your window into that process: how a feeling becomes a formula, how a formula becomes a sealed parcel, and why that opacity is the point.

THE METHOD / FOUR STEPS

How a feeling becomes a formula.

01 — CONSULTATION

We begin with your mood, not your wishlist. A short mood intake, restless, tender, escapist, unsettled. No title preferences and optional genre boxes.

02 — COMPOUNDING

A real human cross-references your intake against our current book stock, reading history, and seasonal sensibility. The match is intuitive, not algorithmic.

03 — SEALING

Your tincture is wrapped in recyclable materials, sealed, and labelled with a bookscription tag. The title remains concealed until you open.

04 — DISPENSING

Your parcel leaves the dispensary within two working days, packed plastic-free in a mailer. Freebies accompany every subscription.

We prioritise independent publishers and small presses. Major titles appear only when they genuinely fit your needs.

PLASTIC-FREE

All packaging is recyclable or compostable. No plastic, no bubble wrap, no landfill trash.
